Learn the Proper Skin Cleansing Techniques

You would think that something as simple as cleansing your face would be intuitive – there’s no way to mess that up, right? Wrong! It is a simple enough routine, however, there really is a right way, and a wrong way. And that’s the thing with cleansing – if you’re doing it wrong you could be doing more harm than good to your skin! With this in mind, Manuela has put together a few tips, do's, don'ts and tricks when it comes to practicing proper skin cleansing techniques.
Cleanse in the evening
So, we actually think it’s best practice to wash your face twice daily, but if you’re only going to do it once a day then the way to go is at night, right before bed.
Cleanse according to skin type
It’s so important that your routine/products match your skin type. If you’re on the oily side you’ll want to be extra gentle (friction can stimulate more oil production) and if you have dry skin, you’ll want to make sure your products have effective hydrating properties.
You don’t want to be “Squeaky Clean”
Use lukewarm water
Squeaky clean sounds great in theory, but it’s actually no good for your skin! If your skin has that squeaky clean feeling after you’ve cleansed, then you’ve likely stripped your skin’s acid mantle too much and that is not in line with the proper skin cleansing techniques. To avoid this simple be gentler with your skin and use a less potent solution.
There are all kinds of misconceptions about what temperature of water is actually good for your skin. The truth is that if you’re at either end of bathroom tap spectrum then you’re likely going to irritate your skin. Just think Goldilocks and the Three Bears; not too hot, not too cold – just right.
Use your hands
You’ve got everything you need right in the palm of your hands, literally! When cleansing or exfoliating you should avoid any harsh brushes, scrubs and even a wash cloth – your fingertips will get the job done just fine. When you’re done cleansing use a cloth with a nice, soft material to gently dry off.
Don’t leave out your neck
When you’re cleansing your face be sure to also clean your jawline, neck and behind the ears too – dirt and debris collects all over!
Finish with a good moisturizer
It’s so important to make sure you’re properly hydrating your skin after exfoliating and cleansing. They go together like PB & J – one really just ain’t too good without the other. After you’ve cleansed and dried off with a cloth, apply a mild moisturizer to properly hydrate and protect your skin!
